Important Announcement (PLEASE READ)
Hello Simeon Family,
During the past few weeks, there have been discussions regarding the Career and Technical Education options at Simeon and the closing of the Electricity and Automotive Technology programs.
I am inviting you to participate in a discussion about CTE programs on Thursday, July 31 at 6 p.m. in our auditorium, but I also want to be clear on student options and why the programs were closed.
The optimal enrollment for CTE programs is approximately 85 students per program. Only 57 students were enrolled in Electricity this year and only 5 percent earned qualifying certifications this past school year. Automotive Technology had 54 students last year with less than 5 percent earning qualifying certifications. These programs were not attracting new students, and even after providing extensive informational sessions to provide students the value of the programs, interest did not increase.
Although eliminating these programs was a difficult decision, it did not leave students without other options. Chicago Public Schools and CTE program managers worked with us to create options for impacted students. Electricity students can continue to pursue a career in the construction trades and earn college credit by choosing dual enrollment in the City Colleges of Chicago while remaining full-time Simeon students. Students will also have the option of one of Simeon’s twelve other CTE programs.
Simeon remains one of the largest CTE Academies in the district and continues to surpass expectations. More than 90 percent of the students in these programs earn certifications. These accomplishments set the standard for programs, which were not being met by Electricity and Automotive Technology. As CPS undertook its efforts to revitalize Career Education programs and raise program standards, schools were given the autonomy to close programs based on school data, student enrollment and interest, performance and academic success.
We will continue to educate students and introduce them to excellent career paths. Students still have the option to take Carpentry, Architecture Drafting, Welding, Education (Early Childhood and Teaching), Culinary Arts, Finance and Accounting, Information Technology (CISCO and Web-design), Auto Body, Cosmetology and Barbering courses.
With continued support and strong practices Simeon will continue to be a leader in Career and Technical Education. Opportunities for students to graduate armed with both college readiness skills and career training prepares them to be future leaders of tomorrow. Simeon has a rich history of developing and nurturing students, and this will continue.
My goal is to support our students and present them with every opportunity to be successful. If there are any concerns or questions, please contact me or join us at the discussion on Thursday.
